“Facebook, Inc,” rebrands to “Meta” but social media platform will keep name, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and virtual reality brand Oculus.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently made tech news headlines in announcing that the name of the social media platform’s holding firm will be changed from “Facebook Inc” to “Meta”.

Announced during the course of this year’s Facebook Connect AR/VR conference, the name change is largely aligned with the company’s new goal to build up the “metaverse”, which is a shared virtual environment where individuals can interact using emerging AR/VR-anchored tech.

“We’ve gone from desktop to web to phones, from text to photos to video, but this isn’t the end of the line,” said Zuckerberg during the conference. “The next platform and medium will be even more immersive where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it, and we call this the metaverse.”

The firm’s namesake social media platform will remain to be called Facebook, just as its other products – Instagram, WhatsApp and the virtual reality brand Oculus – will get to keep their names.
